TXT4DM: Text Messaging for
Diabetes Management Pilot Program
communication strategies,
HealthCrowd is able to optimize
response rates and encourage
behavior changes using the
right
message to the
right
patient at the
right
time. TXT4DM will be an
add-on component to the Alliance’s
Live Better with Diabetes (LBD)
Program
. This pilot program will
be conducted from October 2013
through March 2014. The goal
of TXT4DM is to help Alliance
members, ages 21 and over,
manage their diabetes
and stay healthy. Text
messages will be sent
weekly and include
reminders to obtain
specific diabetes
services, expert
health tips, and
information about
diabetes classes or
support groups.
If members are
missing any of the
following screenings/
tests: HbA1c,
retinopathy,
LDL-C, and nephropathy, he/she
will receive text messages at least
twice per month as a reminder to
get those screenings/tests done.
For this pilot project, the
Alliance has identified about
2,000 Alliance members ages
21 years and older who have
diabetes and are listed as having
a cellphone. These members have
been informed about TXT4DM
through mailing and telephonic
outreach. In the letters and during
the telephone calls, our team
informs the member about the
benefits of joining TXT4DM,
possible charges that they may
incur from their mobile service
provider and the risks of texting
during other activities. In order
to participate, members must
complete an Alliance Authorization
Form and mail it to the Alliance.
TXT4DM is a free Alliance
program. However, members will
be charged by their mobile service
provider if they go over their
monthly text message limit or if they
do not have a text message plan. If
they have an unlimited text message
plan, there will be no charges from
their service provider. If members
choose to join, they can stop texts at
any time by texting STOP. If they
need help, they can text HELP in
response to any of the TXT4DM
text messages.
